History
The Isle Du Noir is a relatively self-governing British protectorate in the West Indies, with a legacy, since its founding by pirates and privateers in the 17th century, as a haven for less than honest folk of all sorts, from bankers to gangsters, everyday rogues to high society reprobates.
It seems everyone is hiding something and no one is talking, at least not loudly. Whispered rumors swirl everywhere. The island's main trades are tourism, rum, casino gambling and, of course, offshore finance. Its main bank's vault is legendary for security, secrecy, and the unusual clients who put their faith in it. And most recently, there's appeared an upstart motion picture studio Atlantic Pictures, intent on producing who knows what beyond the reach of Hollywood's Hays Code. As for the law, the Isle's officials are as corrupt as well-placed bribes can make them. Spies from several countries have come to reside as this is the perfect place to hide and the governor has seemed to take up an odd and interesting allegiances that has swirling rumors.
The year is 1930-1949. Recovery from the Panic of '29 has left much of the world's people in the grip of seemingly permanent depression, largely borne as just the way things are now. Yet, daring thieves, elegant gangsters and even homespun criminals are anti-heroes wildly popular with the masses. Great fortunes were lost in '29, but great fortunes were gained. For the surviving and emergent wealthy and privileged, the Roaring Twenties have continued and evolved along, some might say, more cynical and indulgent “Noir” lines.
The imperial and would-be imperial power conflicts that broke out in the Great War have not abated with its end, but a renewed global war, though ever-threatening, thus far has been averted. Credit may be dubiously due to the ongoing intervention of global, rich, dynastic families that have emerged to make their presence and desires felt, after centuries in and out of the shadows. In a world where so much is not what it seemed to past generations, charlatans, con men, occultists and gold-diggers regularly storm the gates of privilege, crashing elaborate parties and trying to worm their way to fame and fortune through the motion pictures.
Yet to all appearance, all seems sunny and mild on the Isle Du Noir. The local magistrates and the island's powerful discreet bankers, as well as their clientele, like it that way. But from the larger world outside odd things have shaken loose and odd beings have come out of the woodwork to make the island their new home. The Bermuda Triangle is nearby.
We are "Decopunk/Noir" meaning we don't know all our history nor where the future will take us. Alternatives abound. If you have seen movies like The Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Rocketeer, if you have heard of shows like Casablanca or played video games like Bioshock they are Decopunk/Noir. We add in Gumshoe detectives, shady dames, hotshot pilots, smugglers, spies and gangsters, movie stars, and gold-diggers, all are at home here on the Isle Du Noir. We are Decopunk/Noir. Decopunk is a recent subset of the punk sci-fi genres (specifically Dieselpunk), centered around the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne art styles that were popular during the Roaring 20s and stayed in fashion until sometime in the 1950s. It has a sleeker and shiny aesthetic compared to Dieselpunk, which tends to be more gritty and dark aesthetic to it.
What sort of characters are you looking for?
We are a resort and full-time RP region open to many types of characters. We can handle mild to wild (though not OOC rude). We have a variety of rooms, homes, and RP businesses available to further your story. If you have a story in mind and can work with people, let's talk.
Bear in mind that you can't just grant yourself outlandish super or magical powers at will that clash with others' characters and their stories. The island has powers and defenses that can and will humble you if you try. We have plenty of time to help people play out fun stories, but no time for the rude or selfish.
Who do I ask about this place?
Helena Wells (pwrofwhy) runs the place.
Check with my staff if I am not around but if you have questions come see me! The Linden stops here.
